Shifting Opinions About Online Casino Gambling In United Kingdom.
Recent online casinos survey conducted by
Harris Interactive has confirmed the results of similar studies on the
British attitude toward online casino gambling. According to the research firm, most internet users in the United Kingdom
are yet to visit online casinos. 97 percent of the respondents that participated in the survey state they have never
wagered on sports over the internet, and 94 percent have never indulged in a game of online poker at an online casino.
Given that worldwide revenues for the online casino industry were recorded at $10.9 billion dollars in 2005, the high
number of those unfamiliar with the industry presents operators of online casinos with a huge potential market. In the
United Kingdom alone, 94 percent of respondents have never gambled at an online casino and 91 percent have never gambled
on sports. One of the major factors behind this traditional reluctance to acknowledge gaming is the legality issue.
However, more people are expected to admit to online gambling when the industry is fully licensed and regulated by 2007.
The study also showed that most respondents are unsure where they personally stand on the legality issue surrounding
online casino gambling. Trends from U.S. surveys show that American online casino players tend to vote overwhelmingly
in support of legalization. However, a mere 32 percent of British respondents stated that they would oppose a government
ban on online casinos, while 34 percent were in favor. Another 34 percent of those surveyed were undecided if they
supported or opposed gambling at online casinos.
